What does the air quality index (AQI) mean?
The air quality index (AQI) turns pollution measurements into one number from 0 to 500. The higher the number, the more polluted the air and the greater the health concern. In the US it's based on the EPA scale, built from pollutants like fine particles (PM2.5), ozone and PM10, and each band has its own color so you can read it at a glance.
| 0–50 | Good. Air quality is satisfactory and poses little or no risk. |
| 51–100 | Moderate. Acceptable for most people. Unusually sensitive people may want to limit long, heavy outdoor exertion. |
| 101–150 | Unhealthy for sensitive groups. Children, older adults and people with asthma or heart and lung conditions should reduce long or intense outdoor activity. |
| 151–200 | Unhealthy. Everyone may begin to feel effects. Sensitive groups should avoid long outdoor exertion. |
| 201–300 | Very unhealthy. Health alert: everyone should limit time and activity outdoors. |
| 301+ | Hazardous. Emergency conditions. Stay indoors with windows closed where possible. |
Breath Easy shows your live AQI on this same color scale, with the pollutant breakdown behind it, so one glance tells you whether today is a normal day or a stay-inside day.
How to protect yourself from wildfire smoke and haze
Wildfire and bushfire smoke can travel hundreds of miles, leaving a thick haze and push the AQI into unhealthy levels even when the fire is far away. The main danger is fine particles (PM2.5), which reach deep into the lungs. They're especially hard on children, older adults and people with asthma or COPD.
- Check the AQI before going out, especially before runs, sports practice or outdoor play.
- Close windows and doors when smoke is coming, and use air conditioning on recirculate if you have it.
- Use a HEPA air purifier in the room where you spend the most time, such as a bedroom.
- Move exercise indoors on smoky days. Heavy breathing pulls more particles into your lungs.
- Keep asthma medication handy and follow your care plan if symptoms start.
Breath Easy tracks active fires near you with NASA satellite data and shows wind-aware smoke risk, so you know whether smoke is heading your way before it arrives.
PM2.5 vs. ozone (smog): what's the difference?
PM2.5 are tiny particles, 2.5 micrometers or smaller, from smoke, traffic and industry. They can get deep into the lungs and even the bloodstream, and they're the main pollutant during wildfire smoke events. Ozone, the main ingredient of smog, is a gas that forms near the ground when sunlight reacts with pollution, so it usually peaks on hot, sunny afternoons. That's why the air can be fine in the morning and unhealthy by late afternoon. Breath Easy shows both, so you know which one is driving today's AQI.
Questions people ask

Yes. Breath Easy is free to download and shows live AQI, pollutants, the 5-day outlook and nearby wildfires. Breath Easy Pro is an optional monthly, annual or lifetime purchase that adds the AI daily briefing, push alerts, smoke-incoming warnings, widgets, up to 5 locations and no ads.
Where does the air quality data come from?
From official monitoring networks and government sources, such as EPA AirNow stations, plus NASA FIRMS satellite fire detection and NOAA weather data.
Does it work outside the US?
Yes. Breath Easy shows live air quality worldwide, and NASA satellite fire detection covers the whole globe, including bushfires in Australia and wildfires in Canada and Europe.
Does it show fires near me?
Yes. It shows every active fire detected by NASA satellites near you, with its distance, direction and intensity, plus wind-aware smoke risk.
Is it useful for asthma?
Many families managing asthma or COPD use it to decide when to stay inside, close windows or move activities indoors. It's an information tool, not medical advice, so always follow your doctor's plan.
