When should I leave for the airport?
A common rule of thumb is to arrive 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one, a little less with PreCheck or without checked bags. Enter your flight time and travel time to get a quick estimate.
This is a general guide. Real security lines change by airport, terminal, day and hour. The TSA Wait Times app uses live checkpoint data and AI predictions for your airport and flight to build a personal departure timeline.
When are TSA lines the longest?
- Early mornings (about 5 to 8 a.m.) are often the busiest, as the first wave of flights departs.
- Late afternoons and Sunday evenings get busy with business and weekend travellers heading home.
- Holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break and summer weekends bring the longest lines of the year.
- Mid-day and mid-week (Tuesday and Wednesday) are usually the quietest times to fly.
- Bad weather and flight delays can bunch passengers together and suddenly lengthen lines.
Patterns differ by airport and terminal, which is why the app shows hourly trends and live data for each checkpoint.
Is TSA PreCheck worth it?
TSA PreCheck lets approved travellers use dedicated security lanes where you usually keep your shoes, belt and light jacket on and leave laptops and travel-size liquids in your bag. PreCheck lanes are often much shorter, which makes it popular with frequent flyers. Not every airport or checkpoint has a PreCheck lane open at all times, so it helps to check before you go. The app's what-if simulator shows how much time PreCheck could save at your airport and time of day.
