The UV index measures how strong the sun's ultraviolet radiation is at a given time and place. It runs from 0 upward, and the higher the number, the faster unprotected skin can burn. It's usually highest around midday, and it can be high even on cool or cloudy days. That's why it's worth checking, not guessing.
